Oba (Dr.) Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II was born on 13th October 1937 in the historic and ancient town of Ilesa, present day Osun State, to the royal family of Bepo Aromolaran. He was sired by his father, Oba Oduyomade Olanrewaju Aromolaran I, who reigned as the Owa-Obokun Adimula of ljesaland from 1920 to 1942, and his mother, Olori Rachael Tinuola, who hailed from Esa-Oke, in the present day Oriade Local Government. He was from the Bepo-Aromolaran royal lineage of the Bilayi Arere Ruling House.

The young Adekunle Aromolaran grew up in a home where the foundation in the Christian faith had its essence. His family is an adherent to the Methodist principles which emphasized integrity, humility, and faith. His father's devout spirituality and commitment to Methodist values provided a model of disciplined, compassionate leadership that left a lasting impression on him. From his father and mother, he learned the virtues of humility, fairness but firmness as well as service, which qualities were to influence his personal approach to leadership.

Early Education

Late Oba Aromolaran II started his primary school at Otapete Methodist School, llesa which was followed by his attendance of Agbeni Methodist School, Ekotedo, lbadan in 1952. He proceeded to Wesley College, Ibadan In 1957, where he obtained his Teacher's Grade II Certificate. His training at Wesley College required early morning labour, strict adherence to ethical principles, all of which result in an in-built resilience and self-reliance. During this training period, he became engrossed with the daily routines and values he underwent. After his time at Wesley College, he secured a teaching role at Nawair-Ud-Deen Teacher Training College in Abeokuta. All of these were to manifest later in his life and played critical roles in his management of the traditional and customary duties that was to later define his reign as a traditional ruler.

One of his teachers who had influence on him at Wesley College was his games master, Mr. Bifarin, who pushed him to maximize his physical and intellectual prowess, leading to his high level of resilience and determination.

In 1961, Oba Aromolaran II enrolled at the University College lbadan (now the University of Ibadan) to study Economics and Political Science. He earned a full scholarship sponsored by Shell-BP, allowing him to fully engage in his studies. He honed his skills in economic theory and governance, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1964. By this time, Oba Aromolaran II had developed a strong sense of empathy, responsibility, and commitment to his people. This was to manifest by the time he became an adult.

He continued his academic pursuit when he earned a Graduate Diploma in Public Administration from the former University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1965, which was followed by a Master's degree in Development Economics from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States of America. He was to later earn a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Development Economics from the University of Ibadan.

Professional Career

He worked briefly as a civil servant under the former Western Regional government, rising to the position of a Deputy Permanent Secretary. Thereafter, he was to resign his appointment and channeled his passion for education into founding Aromolaran Publishing Company in 1971, which produced essential educational materials for schools across West Africa. His impact was to extend beyond publishing, as he championed education throughout his life as a teacher and publisher. His left and enduring legacy in education as a testament of his commitment to intellectual development and empowerment, inspiring generations upon generations to impact education as a centerpiece of human capital development.

The publishing company grew into a respected educational publishing powerhouse in West Africa, with branches extending to Ghana, Sierra Leone, London, and New York. This endeavour fulfilled Oba Aromolaran II's long-held ambition to foster knowledge and make quality educational materials widely accessible. Oba Aromolaran II played a key role in maintaining educational standards by serving as an examiner for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for the GCE Advanced Level in Economics. Ascending The Throne Of His Forefathers

In 1981, the passing of Oba Agunlejika II left the throne of Owa-Obokun Adimula vacant, and the Bilayiarere Ruling House was called upon to nominate a successor. As a prominent member of this royal lineage, Oba Aromolaran II emerged as a natural choice. By this time, he had established himself as an esteemed civil servant and successful entrepreneur, respected for his integrity, strategic vision, and dedication to education. However, despite his qualifications and the strong backing he received from prominent figures, he felt hesitant to assume the role of king.

Nonetheless, Oba Aromolaran II's journey to the throne of ljesaland had been profoundly influenced by a memorable encounter years earlier with Oba Peter Agunlejika II, his predecessor. During a visit to Ilesa, the young prince, already distinguished by his work in the civil service and his growing business ventures, was summoned by Oba Agunlejika. The elder monarch, renowned for his wisdom and foresight, told the young Aromolaran that he saw him as a future Owa-Obokun. This prophetic statement lingered in the prince's mind, even as he continued to focus on his career and entrepreneurial pursuits. Though he could not yet foresee the path ahead, the words would take on greater significance in the years that followed.

At the time, Oba Aromolaran II was heavily invested in his business ventures, which included the successful Aromolaran Publishing Company and an ambitious brewery project, Presidential Breweries, which he was launching in Ilesa alongside other prominent business men amongst whom was Mr. Isaac Ojo Ajanaku, a successful entrepreneur and Professor Olajuwon Olayide, the then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.

It is worth the while to remember that his publishing enterprise had grown throughout West Africa, providing educational resources in Nigeria, Ghana, and Sierra Leone as stated earlier on, with offices extending to London and New York. Stepping away from these thriving ventures to accept the throne would mean leaving behind a business legacy he had carefully cultivated. Moreover, he was acutely aware of the responsibilities that came with the role of any Owa-Obokun of Ijesaland, a position that demanded both respect for tradition and an ability to meet the high expectations of a region celebrated for its deep customary and traditional values and exemplary style on leadership.

The moment he accepted his fate, Oba Aromolaran II's candidacy was endorsed and formalized by the Agba Ijesa made up of thirteen (13) ljesa kingmakers. The selection process was rigorous, involving consultations, traditional rites, and an evaluation of each candidate's character and lineage. When Oba Aromolaran II was chosen by nine (9) out of the eleven (11) kingmakers that participated in the voting exercise, the announcement was celebrated by the people, who anticipated a reign to be buoyed with unity, wisdom and development.

Installation

15 May 1982 remained the day Oba (Dr.) Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II was officially installed and crowned as the Owa-Obokun Adimula, the paramount ruler of Ijesaland in a historic coronation ceremony which had Chief Bola Ige, then Governor of Oyo State, handing over the staff of office. The event drew dignitaries and esteemed guests from across Nigeria, including Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his wife, Chief (Mrs.) H.I.D. Awolowo. Thousands of ljesa citizens gathered in llesa, celebrating the coronation as a significant moment in their rich history, filled with traditional music, ceremonial attires and traditional rites that are the testaments of the customs and traditions of ljesaland.

Without the Owa-Obokun's presence, the Iwude becomes as tasteless as tea without flavour.
